How To Be Body Positive

I wrote a blog post a few months ago, on “my body image”. The post was all about how I saw my body throughout my childhood, teenage years, and, now, early adulthood. You can click here if you want to read it.
Today I wanted to share my top tips on how to become and stay body positive no matter what size you are. These are all lessons I have learned during the past few years and I can honestly say that when I stick to these “rules” I feel sooo much better, more confident, and more body positive (regardless of how much I weigh or what size I am wearing). I really hope that you find some of these tips helpful and become, even more, confident, and fabulous.

1 – Workout. I am so sorry to start off with this one. I know not everyone likes to work out. Heck, I like it and I am still not doing it often enough. Trust me on this one, working out makes you feel 1000 times better. You can simply go for a walk or a jog around your neighborhood, you can follow a YouTube workout video or you can go to the gym. It doesn’t matter what you choose to do, as long as you get your body moving. After doing 20 crunches my stomach looks exactly the same, but to me, it feels stronger, tighter, flatter. One quick workout changes the way I see my body when I look in the mirror. Go give it a try!

2 – Stop weighing or measuring yourself. Forget the scale and forget your size. If you are trying to lose or gain weight for health reasons, then weighing yourself might be helpful (even necessary in some cases), but never overdo it. If you are not trying to do any of those two, then do yourself a favour and ditch the scale! If you know you feel good, you do not need a number on a scale to validate it. Especially because it will often do the opposite.

3 – This goes hand in hand with my previous point. Do not focus on what size you are wearing. It is so irrelevant. Don’t let a number on a size tag make you feel bad about yourself. If you need to, just cut off the tag and go on with your day.

4 – Put a stop to unrealistic standards. Understand that your body structure is unique and your body can never look identical to someone else’s. Do not set yourself “body goals” based on how someone else looks. In fact, I would suggest dropping “body goals” altogether. Do not try to put your body into a mould it might be impossible to fit in. Fitness influencers are here to inspire and motivate you to work on yourself, give you workout ideas and tips to live a healthier life. They are not here to tell you that you should look like them. Remember that no one has abs after a big meal and for the love of God, stop comparing your body to other people’s.


5 –Dress to feel good. Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in. I have done this mistake so many times, where I would buy a cute top, I would put it on, and I would feel like craappp because it just wasn’t flattering on me (in my eyes anyway). Now I finally know better. I am not going to have unrealistic expectations of what clothes will look like when I try them on. I remind myself that the model does not have my body. Therefore I know this is not what it will look like on me. No matter how much I like something, if I know I am not going to feel comfortable and confident in it, I do not need it in my wardrobe. Regardless if something is trendy, it is not worth paying the price of being uncomfortable all night and feeling like crap, just to look fashionable. Feeling good is so much more important! So stop with the bad purchases and unrealistic expectations.

6 – Get the right fit. If you have to go one or two sizes up, or down, so be it. No one cares and as I already mentioned, you shouldn’t either. What is the point of squeezing into a tight pair of jeans that you can barely breathe in (and can certainly not eat it)?! To me, this sounds like misery. What is the point? Get the size that is the right fit for your body and that way you will both look and feel good.

7 – If you don’t like something, work on it. I think that in order to be at peace with yourself and truly have a healthy body image you have to accept your body as it is. With all its flaws and imperfections. Once you get to that stage, it is absolutely fine to want to work on your body. There is nothing wrong with wanting to lose/gain some weight or get a little leaner/gain some more muscles.


8 – Last but not least, appreciate your body for what it is and everything it does for you. As cheesy as this is, remind yourself that you have a healthy functioning body that is basically your home, so treat it nicely. Even if it doesn’t ‘look’ perfect, it is serving you every day so remind yourself of that when you are feeling low.
