10 Habits To Live A Healthier and Happier Life

Our lifestyle is essentially what we choose to do in our daily lives and how we set up our routine.  Having a routine in life is almost inevitable. I personally love having a routine and I actually do not work very well without it. The only problem is, sometimes our routines can get really boring because we never take the time to actually do things we enjoy and instead just focus on what we have to get done before the day is over. If you spend your daily life just going to work, coming home, and going to sleep, and wait for the weekend to actually live, then there is a problem! Having a dull and boring lifestyle basically means having a dull and boring life.  Life happens every single day and if you are too busy to realise that, then your life will pass by before you get a chance to actually live it. How sad…

I, like many other people, prefer to live my life every day. That does not mean going out, doing fun activities and meeting up with friends on the daily. For me, it simply means having a routine that I actually enjoy and within that do things that make me feel good. I think so many people forget how quickly life goes by. They get trapped in their boring routines and miss the opportunity to live. If you are reading this post, please DO NOT ever let yourself become one of those people! Keep reading to find out what the 10 habits I recommend are, to help you live a better, happier life.

1. Wake up bright and early!
I know many people are supposedly “night owls” but I am not sure there is such a thing. I understand that some people feel they are more productive during the night but I think this is just an unhealthy habit. Humans need to get 8 hours of sleep, during the night. Sleeping all morning, cannot make up for the fact that you were up all night. Go to sleep early, and then wake up early. This is truly the best thing you can do to turn your life around. Get up at 6:00 a.m. and get a chance to enjoy the silence and the calmness that surrounds you. When you wake up early, before the city does, you have a moment to actually feel at peace, calm and relaxed. You have time to take care of yourself and prepare for the day before you have to leave for work. If you are staying at home, waking up early just makes your day longer. It gives you more time, not only to get your work done but also to actually go out and do things you enjoy. I am guilty of sleeping in sometimes, I love sleep so much and it is really hard to get myself out of bed so early. However, I absolutely love it once I am up and going before 6:30 a.m. Try it and you will not regret it.

2. Make your bed!
This may sound silly to people that are not in the habit of doing it, however, this is another life changer. Making your bed in the morning, will barely take you 5 minutes, so why skip it? Starting off your day right is so important. Wake up early, make your bed, and then your body and mind will know a new day has begun. If you wake up and go to work, leaving behind a messy bed, this is what you will come back to, when you get home from work and it will instantly feel like you didn’t even get out of it this morning. Before you know it, it is the afternoon and almost time for you to go back, to an unmade made, and you are thinking to yourself “Did today even happen?!”. This may sound a bit ‘dramatic’ but this is honestly how I see it. Wake up 5 minutes earlier to give yourself enough time to make your bed and form a habit of starting your day right.

3. Have (a healthy) breakfast!
Again, soooo many people skip breakfast. What’s up with that?! If you wake up early you have the time to start your day right, including starting off with a yummy and healthy breakfast that will fill you up and give you the energy to take on your day. Your breakfast on a weekday can be as simple as cereal or granola, with yoghurt and nuts or a sandwich with a fruit on the side. If you really want to put more time into your breakfast and start your day off with a tasty smoothie or an omelette with veggies, that’s even better. Whatever it is you want to have, make sure you do not skip the first (and most important) meal of the day.

4. Exercise!
Physical exercise does not have to do with being or not being a ‘health freak’ or being or not being ‘fit’. Getting into the habit of working out, will help you develop a better lifestyle and actually live a healthier life. I love to exercise because it just makes me feel so good both during and after the workout. I like how my body feels when I finish a  good workout and I also like how I am feeling mentally because I know I just did something that will improve my health and with that, my quality of life. Get your butt off the couch and start living a more active life. Once you do, I promise you will feel so much better both physically and mentally. You can go to the gym and work out with a trainer, you can take a class or you can just work out at home. Whatever way you choose to work out, just make sure you do it. Find some time either in the morning when you wake up, or in the afternoon and dedicate it to exercising.

5. Make yourself look good!
You look good, you feel good and it has nothingggg to do with what other people see. It is all about how you feel about yourself! Dedicate time to doing your makeup and hair and picking out an outfit you feel fabulous in. Do not just put clothes on and just get by. Put together an outfit you really like that makes you feel confident and love the way you look in it. Not every day will be a makeup and fabulous outfit kind of day. You can feel amazing by wearing a matching pair of tracksuits and having your hair in a bun. What matters is that you take the time to make yourself look and feel good, in whatever way you choose to do so.

6. Feed your soul! 
In the mornings, one of the first things I like to do is sit down and read. I think it is extremely important to take some time out of your day to feed your soul with positivity, love and just overall good vibes. Whether it is in the morning, or before you go to sleep (or both), take some time to read a few pages from your favourite book. It can be sci-fi,  poetry or a novel… it really doesn’t matter. What matters is that you read something that you enjoy, it makes you feel good and it just brings you joy. When you find time in your daily routine, to read a book that makes you happy and puts you in a good mood, it will inevitably affect -in a positive way- your entire day.

7. Walk!
Walking for 20-30 minutes every day apparently has some amazing health benefits. I would strongly advise you to either walk or jog for 20-30 minutes every day, not to get fit but to give your mind time to relax. I used to jog almost every single day for 40-60 minutes and I sadly got out of this habit this year. I sure am planning to get back into it again! I already mentioned working out and I think that one cannot replace the other. I think that walking is such a great stress reliever and it just overall helps so much with mental health. I love jogging because it helps me clear my head from all my worries. Coming back from a jog, with a clear headspace, I can actually look at things from a different perspective.

8. Unplug!
Do NOT start your day by going on your phone as soon as you open your eyes. I understand it might be tempting to do so but really, don’t. I do enjoy going on social media but knowing when to unplug and just take a break from it all, is crucial. We are constantly on our phones, refreshing Instagram 100 times in 10 minutes… do you know why? Because we have just gotten into a bad habit. Social media is enjoyable when you are going on platforms for a specific reason and seek to find inspiration. The second it becomes a habit, it just takes over your life and you end up wasting your precious time, pointlessly scrolling on your phone. Learn to unplug. Only go on your phone when you have a purpose for it. Do not go on Facebook because you are bored. If you are bored read a book, go for a walk, or bake cupcakes. Do something that is worth your time because before you know it, it is already 7:00 p.m., you have already been on your phone for 2 hours and you realise a little too late that you have just wasted your afternoon.

9. Take your night-time routine seriously!
Your body and mind need time to get into ‘night-time’ mode. You might be tired and just want to run and get in bed as fast as you can, however, your quality of sleep will just not be the same. You have to allow yourself to relax before you go to sleep. Take a nice hot shower,  change into your comfy pj’s, enjoy an episode of your favourite series accompanied by a warm cup of your favourite hot beverage. Once it’s over, brush your teeth, do your skin-care routine and only then, get in bed. If you are still feeling tense, read a few pages of a good book until you get tired enough to fall asleep. Giving yourself all this time to wind down, relax and actually realise it is night time, is crucial to having a good night sleep. Do not skip your night-time routine because you are lazy or “too tired”. You will regret in the morning and it will have a serious effect on your quality of sleep -and life- in the long run.

10. Prepare for the day ahead!
Preparation is key! I am the type of person that likes to plan ahead; I like to know what I am doing, where I am going and of course what I am wearing (LOL). If you want to have a successful day, you have to prepare for one. Before you go to sleep, take a look at your diary and see what your plans are for the day ahead. If you have something important happening, you have the time to mentally prepare for it and pray before you go to sleep. If it is just going to be a normal day at work, take your time to pick out your outfit so it is ready to go in the morning, think what you would like to have for lunch and see if you can fit in an afternoon coffee date with your best friend -or an afternoon nap, depending on what you need the most-. Even if you just lay in bed and mentally prepare for the day ahead, you will find that when you wake up in the morning you will feel so pumped and ready to go for your day (instead of just waking up and not knowing what day or year it is, what you have planned for that day).
